The Colony calls itself the City by the Lake, and it earns it: the city wraps around the eastern shore of Lewisville Lake. It was a planned community from the start, laid out in the late 1960s and incorporated in 1977, and it has grown to about 44,000 people. SH 121, the Sam Rayburn Tollway, forms the north edge; FM 423 runs up the west side; and Grandscape, the huge retail and dining development off SH 121, has made the corridor one of the busiest in Denton County.
Because most of The Colony was planned and built, the trees are mostly landscape trees: young live oaks, crape myrtles, cedar elms, and red oaks planted when the subdivisions went up. That is actually an advantage, because a young tree pruned right grows into a sound mature tree. The ones that need help are the early plantings with competing leaders and bad crotches, and the lakeside lots near Stewart Creek and Hidden Cove that take wind off the water. East of the lake the soil shifts toward the black clay that moves every summer.
