Honey Grove got its name from Davy Crockett. Camping near the Red River in 1835, he found wild bees in hollow trees and wrote home about a honey grove. His friend Samuel Erwin settled here first, and Benjamin Walcott platted the town in 1848. About 1,600 people live here now. The 1889 City Hall and Jail at 6th and Hickory is the last surviving original civic building in Fannin County: two stories of honey-colored limestone from Floyd Quarry, with a tower you can see for miles. The Santa Fe railroad reached town in 1887, and the historic downtown still shows it in the stone storefronts and the old depot.
