Ravenna started life as Willow Point. Settlers, including John Hilyard Tackitt, Alonzo Larkin, J. T. Crawford, and T. A. Patillo, were here by 1850. The post office took the name Ravenna in the mid-1880s, for the ravines around town. Locals say a deep one cut straight through the townsite. Ravenna incorporated in 1887. G. L. Marshall and Kate Wolfe ran Ravenna College here until it moved to Ector in 1889. The Denison, Bonham and New Orleans Railroad laid tracks through in 1891, and the MKT had taken them over by 1915. Cotton kept the town working through the 1920s. About 175 people live here now, and the Bonham school district runs the schools.

The tree work here is ravine country. Post oaks and cedar elms grow thick in the drainages, and when a big one fails on a slope it takes soil with it, so the ravines need real attention. In town the lots carry old pecans and oaks from the cotton days: good trees that mostly want deadwood cleaned out. The farm roads run fence rows of cedar that keep coming back. Wind rolls down off the Red River bottom in storm season. Blackland clay under all of it, so roots sit shallow and trunks heave in wet years.
